The annual report and accounts of DCMS stated that the department successfully delivered on King Charles III's coronation, described as a once-in-a-generation moment that united the country.
The Republic CEO criticized the coronation expenses, asserting that the reported £72m does not account for the true costs incurred by other departments, estimating the total cost could be much higher.
Graham Smith argued that spending £72m on a coronation, which is not mandated by law, is absurd especially when essential services are facing cuts, deeming it a significant use of taxpayer money.
Despite 20 million viewers for the coronation ceremony, it marked a decline compared to the 29 million who watched the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
