The first reality check came when I stepped off the bus and realized that New York had become a city thriving with tourists, completely devoid of the darkness I'd expected. It felt like a punch in the gut to see Times Square filled with families, enjoying the sights and shopping, rather than the crime-ridden playground I had pictured from the movies I loved.
As someone who had embraced a lifestyle of drugs and crime, I was taken aback by New York’s strict laws and the fact that my usual ways of living off petty theft simply weren't possible here. The city felt almost hostile to my old ways, reminding me quite quickly that, unlike California, this place was serious about enforcing its rules.
