NYC subway fare will increase to $3 in 2025
Briefly

The MTA has officially approved a fare hike that will increase the price of a subway ride from $2.90 to $3, effective August 2025. This marks another increase in their pattern of pricing adjustments every two years, consistently implementing approximately a 4% rise since 2009.
Lisa Daglian from the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee remarked on the predictability of MTA fare hikes, stating, 'We know it's coming every couple of years and we know it's going to be four percent, as opposed to NJ Transit which imposed a 15% fare increase out of the blue this summer.' This comparison emphasizes the impact of these incremental adjustments versus abrupt changes.
The MTA cites its fare hikes as necessary due to increasing pension and health benefits costs for employees, yet customers are expressing mixed feelings as these hikes coincide with some improvements in service, including the phasing out of older trains in favor of newer, advanced models.
Alongside the fare rise, New Yorkers should prepare for an additional cost burden, as the implementation of a $9 congestion pricing hike is set to take effect on January 5, 2025, indicating a broader trend of increasing transportation costs in the region.
