There is a clear need for more telephone numbers as a result of economic growth and activity in the New York City metro areas, therefore, an additional area code is required.
The new area code overlay will be able to address the expansion of telecommunication services which serves this region and to support future demand.
New Yorkers anxious to learn the new code, however, will have to hold. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator will unveil the three-digit number in the coming months.
New York City has seen several new area codes pop up over recent decades, most recently in 2011, when 929 made its debut.
