Katherine Hartley Short, 42, was found dead behind a locked bedroom door at her Hollywood Hills residence with a note and gun nearby. A concerned friend contacted authorities after not hearing from her for 24 hours, leading to her discovery around 6:40 p.m. Monday. Foul play was ruled out, though homicide detectives responded to the scene. Dispatch audio confirmed the shooting as self-inflicted. Katherine was an NYU graduate who worked as a social worker in Los Angeles. She was adopted by Emmy winner Martin Short and his late wife Nancy Dolman, who also adopted sons Oliver and Henry.
