The Super Eagles players of Nigeria are standing firm in their refusal to compete against Libya after facing over twelve hours stranded at an abandoned airport with no resources. The shocking lack of care from local authorities during their ordeal has led to this drastic decision, marking a significant incident during their AFCON qualification campaign.
Captain William Troost-Ekong expressed his disbelief over the situation, detailing their plight at the airport: '12+ hours in an abandoned airport in Libya after our plane was diverted whilst descending... They've locked the airport gates and left us without phone connection, food or drink. This is disgraceful behavior.' His account reflects the severe conditions the team faced and the lack of support from officials.
He further noted the chaotic nature of their experience, stating, 'Even the Tunisian Pilot who thankfully managed to navigate the last minute change to an airport not fit for our plane to land had never seen something like this before.' Troost-Ekong's words emphasize the unprecedented challenges not only faced by players but also by aviation professionals.
Troost-Ekong concluded with the frustrations faced by both players and flight crew: 'Upon arrival he tried to find a nearby airport to rest with his crew to be denied at every hotel again under Government instruction. They have returned to now sleep on the plane which is parked up.' This highlights the extent of the difficulties and lack of regard shown to the Nigerian team during their ordeal.
