Prime Minister Christopher Luxon officially apologized for the abuse and neglect of over 200,000 children in New Zealand's care system, acknowledging it was a national disgrace.
The inquiry revealed that of 650,000 children in care from 1950 to 2019, nearly a third experienced various forms of abuse, exploitation, or neglect.
Highlighting the impact of this systemic abuse, Luxon stated, 'For many of you it changed the course of your life, and for that, the government must take responsibility.'
The six-year investigation was the widest-ranging inquiry globally concerning the mistreatment of vulnerable individuals in care, leading to Luxon's unreserved apology in Parliament.
