New York becomes first state to recognize Lunar New Year as a statewide holiday - QNS
Briefly

New York State has made history by officially recognizing Lunar New Year as a statewide holiday, following legislation led by Assemblymember Ron Kim. This comes after the holiday's previous recognition as a school holiday in 2023. Kim emphasized the significance of this milestone for Asian American communities, noting that it represents a shift in cultural recognition that will positively impact future generations. The resolution's timing with the Year of the Snake serves to reinforce its cultural importance, inspiring collective participation in Lunar New Year celebrations.
We are celebrating Lunar New Year as a statewide holiday-the first in the country to do so, thanks to all of our efforts led by the chair of the APA task force.
For the first time, a generation of young people will grow up in this state and beyond knowing that Asian Americans belong in this country, they belong in our cities, and they belong in this state.
