The MTA will phase out over 40-year-old subway cars starting in 2025, replacing them with the new R211, enhancing passenger experience and reliability.
MTA Chair Janno Lieber emphasized that while older subway cars had been vital during the system's revival, they are now failing six times more often than new cars.
The new R211 cars will provide better accessibility, amenities like wider entrances and digital signage, and will be equipped for modern signaling in the subway system.
With a budget of $10.9 billion, the MTA plans to order 1,500 new subway cars, addressing the urgent need to modernize its aging fleet.
