Starting November 12, all New Yorkers must use garbage pails of 55 gallons or less with tight lids to keep streets clean and limit rat activity. The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) reports improvements in cleanliness as residents adapt to this mandatory system.
DSNY Deputy Commissioner Joshua Goodman emphasized the new system's effectiveness, noting that since the introduction of covered trash, there has been a significant decrease in rat sightings and improvement in street cleanliness.
Beginning January 2, 2025, the city will impose fines starting at $50 for not complying with the garbage set-out mandate, marking a strong move towards maintaining urban hygiene.
From June 2026, all property owners in NYC will be required to purchase the official NYC Bin. The city has partnered with Home Depot to make these bins available at competitive prices, emphasizing the commitment to sanitation.
