The incident occurred when air traffic controllers cleared an Alaska Airlines jet to take off at Nashville International Airport, while simultaneously instructing a Southwest Airlines jet to cross the same runway. This communication breakdown nearly resulted in a serious accident, prompting an NTSB investigation.
On September 12, the Alaska Airlines pilots, faced with a conflicting crossing clearance for the Southwest jet, were forced to abort their takeoff and apply brakes sharply, ultimately deflating their tires. Luckily, no injuries were reported among the passengers and crew.
The NTSB revealed that it is still in the investigation phase, having gathered cockpit voice recorder data from the Alaska Airlines jet, as well as conversations between pilots and air traffic controllers, to understand the events that unfolded.
What stands out in the preliminary report is the timeline of air traffic control communications, where just moments before the Alaska jet received a takeoff clearance, the Southwest jet was instructed to cross the same runway. This illustrates the critical importance of clear communication in ensuring aviation safety.
