NatWest's recent decision to block unapproved messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger aims to enhance internal communication practices with a focus on regulatory compliance.
"An organization's choice of communication tool is not merely a technical decision but a governance imperative, which is of particular importance to financial sector organizations like NatWest, given the sensitive nature of the data they handle every day," said Element CEO Matthew Hodgson.
"Anything less risks not just operational inefficiency, but the very foundations of accountability," added Hodgson, highlighting the critical nature of compliant communication in financial services.
Despite the bans on consumer messaging apps, a 2023 report found only 2.6% of organizations viewed these restrictions as effective, signalling challenges in compliance enforcement.
