Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced the launch of the 'Baltic Sentry' mission to enhance protection for undersea cables in the Baltic Sea region, responding to recent security incidents.
Rutte emphasized the strategic importance of underwater infrastructure, stating that over 95% of internet traffic travels through these cables, underpinning around $10 trillion in daily financial transactions.
He noted that the Baltic Sea experienced multiple significant incidents, including the Nord Stream pipeline ruptures and a damaged gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia, raising concerns over security.
The mission will utilize a variety of assets, including frigates, maritime patrol aircraft, and naval drones, to bolster surveillance and deterrence efforts in the region.
