Myanmar's military rulers announced the release of 5,864 prisoners, including 180 foreigners, under an amnesty to mark the country's 77 years of independence from British colonial rule.
The military stated the release was granted on humanitarian and compassionate grounds, commuting life sentences of 144 individuals to 15 years, highlighting a regular practice of releasing prisoners during holidays.
Among those still imprisoned is former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, serving a 27-year sentence for charges including incitement and corruption, which she denies.
As part of the Independence Day ceremony, a speech by military chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing was conveyed by Deputy Prime Minister Soe Win, reflecting the military's ongoing control.
