Rachel Goldberg-Polin reflects on her conflicting emotions regarding the hostage situation. Despite mourning her son Hersh, she expresses relief that others will find closure. 'We can hold two truths; we can even hold more. Humans are fascinating creatures. We can experience a multitude of diverse feelings simultaneously.' This recognition of complex emotions underscores the depth of her family's tragedy amidst the hope for other hostages.
Discussing her harrowing experience, Rachel shared, 'My only son, Hersh, was kidnapped from a music festival on Oct. 7, 2023, after having his dominant forearm and hand blown off. He was held captive, tortured, starved and then, after 328 days...shot in the hand, shoulder, neck and twice in the head.' Her words provide insight into the unimaginable suffering victims endure in such conflicts.
On the recent hostage deal, she stated, 'This does not mean we are not in agonizing mourning and oozing with grief for our beloved Hersh, who we buried 135 days ago.' Her poignant acknowledgment of intertwined anguish and relief speaks to the difficult reality faced by families impacted by violence and war.
