My favourite room: 'Someone asked me did I build my dream kitchen. I said I never dreamed of a kitchen,' - inside fashion guru Andrea Shaw's Donegal home with an Asian twist
"The first impression of businesswoman Andrea Shaw's home is one of comfort and elegance combined. Then two distinct themes emerge - a lot of the furnishings are Chinese, while the rest are very Donegal, and happily the two work really well together, just as the two cultures have done in Andrea's own life. She adores her home county, particularly the Inishowen Peninsula, and given half a chance will wax eloquently for hours about the mountains, the hiking trails, the swim spots, even the local tweed."
"However, she spent many years in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Nanjing. She thoroughly enjoyed those years and felt very at home there too. "I must be the only woman in Donegal with chopsticks in her kitchen," she laughs. "I think I was Chinese in a past life. I had such a draw to Hong Kong and China, and I always got on really well with Chinese people.""
Andrea Shaw spent many years living and working in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Nanjing, holding senior positions with leading fashion companies including Calvin Klein. She founded the Shanghai Sirens GAA team in her spare time and felt very much at home in Chinese cities. The charms of the Inishowen Peninsula ultimately drew her back to Donegal, where she adores the mountains, hiking trails, swim spots and local tweed. Her home reflects a blend of Chinese and Donegal influences, with many Chinese furnishings alongside Donegal pieces that harmonise well. She keeps chopsticks in her kitchen and jokes she felt 'Chinese in a past life'.
