My extraordinary life on Svalbard - the island on top of the world
Briefly

Svalbard, where I live, is a land of extreme seasons. The sun sets in October and doesn’t rise until March. Summer brings nearly four months of daylight.
Constructing a house here requires special precautions. We use poles anchored in the frozen ground, and our triple-paned windows prevent heat loss.
Polar bear encounters, while rare in town, are possible anytime. Thus, we carry firearms and flares for safety in case they appear.
