The speed limits in Ireland are set to be reduced to bolster road safety measures. Effective from February 7, the limit on national secondary roads will drop from 100km/h to 80km/h, while local roads will see a decrease from 80km/h to 60km/h. Urban speed limits will also be reduced from 50km/h to 30km/h. An enforcement campaign led by An Garda Síochána will ensure compliance, with new signage being installed to educate road users about these changes. The Department of Transport believes these adjustments will contribute to safer communities.
Introducing more consistent and appropriate speed limits will help to improve road safety in Ireland, said a department spokesperson.
There will be new road signage put up to notify people as to where these speed limits are being reduced,
Garda Inspector Gillian Synnott emphasized the need for awareness, stating that there will be a major enforcement campaign.
Members of An Garda Síochána's Roads Policing Units will actively enforce the reduced speed limits, especially in built-up areas.
