Road safety campaigners in Ireland believe new speed limits on local roads are only a 'first step' towards enhancing road safety. They emphasize the need for better road maintenance and rehabilitation as many local roads are in poor condition, contributing to accidents. Advocates call for routine release of comprehensive accident data, including factors like road conditions, to support evidence-based safety measures. Junior transport minister Seán Canney supports this view, stating speed reductions must coincide with investments in road maintenance to ensure safety for all users.
"Speed is a recognised factor in many of the crashes that result in death and serious injury on these roads, as detailed in reports made public."
"It's very hard to get information regarding the contributory causes of road crashes even for the families involved, so that is a concern," Donna Price, of the Irish Road Victims' Association, said.
"There is no point in having a reduced speed if we are not at the same time investing in the maintenance and restoration of our roads to make sure they are safe to travel on," he told RTÉ.
"It's important that information regarding contributory causes of road crashes is shared because obviously all of our road safety efforts have to be evidence-based."
