During a renovation of Scotts Park in Wooler, England, over 170 World War II-era practice bombs were discovered buried beneath the playground. Initially uncovered by construction workers, a subsequent survey revealed a total of 176 bombs in a small area, prompting urgent recovery efforts due to their potential danger. Local officials acknowledged the discovery's troubling implications, particularly regarding children's safety, and highlighted the need for careful handling of these remnants of history while planning for the park's future use.
"It soon became apparent that the scale of the problem was far greater than anyone had anticipated," the local council said in a news release.
"It's quite something to think the children have been playing on bombs and it's been a really challenging situation," said Wooler Councillor Mark Mather.
