Yemassee Police Chief Gregory Alexander assured the public that the escaped Rhesus macaque monkeys pose "almost no danger," stating they are harmless and skittish.
The escape occurred when a new employee at Alpha Genesis failed to fully secure an enclosure, leading to the primates getting out about a mile from downtown Yemassee.
To recapture the monkeys, Alpha Genesis is setting up traps and using thermal imaging cameras, working closely with local police.
Historically, primates have escaped the Alpha Genesis facility multiple times since 2014, raising concerns about handling their confinement and safety measures.
