Judge Robert S. Carter stated there is 'an almost total lack of consensus as to the medical ethics of adolescent gender dysphoria treatment,' despite major medical organizations supporting such care.
The recent law, contained in Senate Bill 49 signed by Republican Gov. Mike Parson, indefinitely bans gender-affirming surgeries for trans minors and imposes a temporary ban on puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones.
The lawsuit, known as Noe v. Parson, was initiated by families of three transgender individuals and supported by multiple organizations, including Lambda Legal and the ACLU of Missouri.
The law prohibits Medicaid funding for gender-affirming treatment focused on transition for both minors and adults, as well as surgeries for incarcerated individuals.
