Mission in Nigeria: Protecting the pangolin
Briefly

The Pangolin Conservation Working Group of Nigeria (PCWGN) has been vital in rescuing pangolins from illegal poaching, having saved around 100 of these endangered animals since its formation in 2016. Despite a 2021 ban on pangolin scales for medicinal use by Chinese authorities, poaching continues due to local poverty and demand. PCWGN, under the leadership of Professor Olajumoke Morenikeji, works not only to rescue pangolins but also to educate communities about wildlife conservation and to partner with suspected poachers to reduce poaching activities through incentives and awareness programs.
Pangolin Conservation Working Group of Nigeria has rescued around 100 pangolins since its inception, preventing them from being trafficked and used in illegal wildlife trade.
Our campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and to persuade communities to stop poaching through education and incentives.
Despite pangolin scales being removed from authorized medicine, the demand in certain communities complicates conservation efforts.
PCWGN collaborates with community members, including hunters and previous poachers, to create a cooperative approach for tracking and rescuing trafficked pangolins.
