Milpitas's city council has proposed increasing their salaries significantly from $904 to $1,900 monthly to address stagnant compensation. This move aligns with a statewide trend to incentivize public service involvement. If passed, these salary changes would take effect in December 2026, upon the next election cycle. The proposed raises have garnered support but also raised questions about whether the mayor should also receive a simultaneous raise. The initiative stems from a new state law that allows cities to adjust council salaries based on population growth and inflation.
The council agreed this week to move forward with plans to increase their monthly salary from $904 to $1,900 a month.
"The salary sometimes, could be a factor on some people running for office, to encourage more people to at least get involved in governance," said Councilmember Evelyn Chua.
The change must take place when the councilmembers begin a new term. The mayor's salary however, has no limit.
"If we're going to get the same pay raise, council and mayor should have it at the same time," said Councilmember Hon Lien.
