Shagufta Asam, a dedicated foster mother from Ilford, was recently honored with an MBE for her 33 years of commitment to fostering vulnerable children through Redbridge social services. Since starting in 1991, she has provided a home for hundreds of children, from infants to teenagers, often taking them in during emergencies. Shagufta, who juggles her own family life with fostering, stresses the profound positive impact fostering can have on both the children and the carers, encouraging others to consider this path.
I got a letter from the Cabinet Office and was just shocked, Shagufta said. Fostering is just what I love doing, not something I expect to be awarded for.
We always need more foster carers and volunteers who might be able to help to get in touch with our fostering service.
If anyone is thinking about fostering just go for it. Fostering can be life changing for the child and for you too.
What Shagufta has given in love and support for vulnerable children has a lasting impact on all those she has cared for over the years.
