The Roman Empire was such a powerful force that we still see its effects on our modern world today. From art and architecture to literature to law, our society would not be the same without the ancient Romans.
Rome was governed as a Republic that became a model for the United States and other modern governments. During this period, it expanded from a single city to control Italy, Greece, Spain, and much of North Africa.
While Rome faced many challenges in expanding its territory, the fierce resistance from Celtic tribes in Scotland and the indomitable Germanic tribes proved to be significant obstacles in its path.
Emperor Trajan ruled Rome when it was at its largest, including what are today Armenia and Romania, and reached the Persian Gulf.
