With escalating housing costs, many older Americans on fixed incomes are turning to van life as an alternative living situation. Two seniors in their 70s shared their experiences, highlighting how living in vehicles offers both affordability and lifestyle freedom. These individuals have embraced the nomadic lifestyle to avoid the financial strains of traditional housing, allowing them to save money and pursue more stable future opportunities. Their stories illustrate a growing trend among older demographics seeking adventure while navigating economic challenges.
Minivan Lee, who asked BI to use her YouTube name, lives in her van in Arizona. Lee, 71, has been a nomad for eight years after living in Tucson for 45 years, where she raised four children.
Both said van life has allowed them to save more and work toward a more stable future. They added that they enjoyed the freedom and adventure, wanting a change of pace from their day-to-day lives.
Both older Americans told BI why they took up van life, how they make it work, and what they've noticed about older Americans in their community.
Lee said she raised her children well with what she had. 'There was no career - it was just working. There was never enough to save much.'
