Mary Lou McDonald insists nothing 'confusing' about referring internal matter to gardai hours after Brian Stanley exit

"Had the initial complaint been of a criminal nature, it would have gone straight to An Garda Síochána, let me be very clear on that."

"The internal process was investigated by two 'long-standing members' of Sinn Féin, and a barrister who is also a member of Sinn Féin, Ms McDonald said today."

"A serious counter allegation was made during this process and a preliminary report on the matter was furnished to both individuals last week."

"I don't know what's confusing about this. The referral to gardaí was made out of an abundance of caution."
