The crash happened on the L5313 at Loreto Wood in Cavan at 6.45pm yesterday and gardai are appealing for witnesses."

He served a six-year sentence after he admitted being the getaway driver for an armed robbery at a post office in which a female staff member was terrorised by his two accomplices. Since getting out of jail he had previously come to the attention of gardai in Co Cavan for a dangerous driving incident in which he later failed a drugs test just a few weeks ago."

The driver fled the scene and is the subject of a major manhunt by gardai, who searched nearby fields and used thermal imaging. The driver was released from prison last year after serving six years and has a long history of serious drug addiction; blood samples allegedly showing cocaine are under analysis.
