On November 8, security officials at Jorge Chavez International Airport observed a 28-year-old South Korean man with a swollen stomach, suspecting illegal activity that led to the discovery of hundreds of tarantulas, centipedes, and bullet ants.
Authorities found 35 adult tarantulas, covered in mistreated conditions and listed as endangered, along with 285 juvenile tarantulas, 110 centipedes, and nine bullet ants, all native to the Peruvian Amazon.
Wildlife trafficking endangers over 4,000 species globally, with 3,250 recognized as endangered, leading to decreased wildlife populations and significant ecological harm, as highlighted in a recent U.N. report.
