Yorgen Fenech, arrested in 2019 for his alleged involvement in the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, was granted bail by a Maltese court. Caruana Galizia, known for her anti-corruption reporting, was assassinated by a car bomb in 2017. While Fenech denies the charges, his trial date remains unset. Under bail conditions, he must pay a significant deposit, surrender his passport, and adhere to proximity restrictions. Family members reacted with dismay, asserting the Maltese judicial system's failure to bring justice after years of legal proceedings.
Deeply depressing news from the Maltese courts this morning. It's been more than seven years since my mother's assassination and five years since Yorgen Fenech was indicted for her murder.
The Maltese state failed Daphne in life and is now failing her in death. Almost eight years on, justice for her murder has not been delivered.
