Mairead McGuinness to represent Fine Gael on Aras ticket as party's only presidential hopeful
Briefly

Ms. McGuinness, the only Fine Gael candidate for the presidency, advised party members to rest before the campaign begins in September. She acknowledged the significant constitutional role of the President and expressed her intention to present her vision for the presidency soon. To be nominated for Fine Gael, candidates required nominations from specific party members, and McGuinness is awaiting formal ratification. Independent Galway TD Catherine Connolly is another Áras candidate, having received support from various political groups. The Fine Gael's candidate selection is ongoing.
"I am conscious of the opportunity and challenge ahead, given the very important constitutional role of the President, and the esteem in which the office is held by the people," she wrote.
"The campaign when it starts will be full-on. I do hope that you manage to get to enjoy some down time with family and friends before September," she said.
To be nominated as a presidential candidate for Fine Gael, hopefuls needed to be nominated by 20 members of the parliamentary party, as well as 25 councillors and five members of the party's ruling body, the executive council.
Independent Galway TD Catherine Connolly is the only other Áras hopeful to put herself forward. So far, she has secured the backing of the Social Democrats and People Before Profit and is meeting with the Labour Party.
