Sara Putt, BAFTA chair, emphasized ongoing challenges in achieving gender parity in film and television, noting low women representation in prestigious award categories as indicative of broader industry access issues.
Putt remarked, "It’s lovely to work with an amazing group of women at Bafta, including its CEO. But we still have a long way to go for gender parity." She highlighted the ongoing efforts and challenges faced by the industry.
Despite BAFTA's overhaul of its nomination system in 2020, only one female director was nominated for best film and best director this year, signaling persistent gender disparities in the industry.
Putt stated, "Our job is to try and get people to watch as wide a variety of films as possible." She acknowledged the difficulty of dictating what content is produced, emphasizing the need for more diverse film submissions.
