The pocket park, originally designed as a cemetery in 1810, is plagued by misnaming issues; it's named St Thomas despite having no connection to the saint.
Burials continued until 1876, and by 1884, the Consistory Court recommended turning the burial grounds into a public park, preserving principal headstones.
The park was opened in October 1885 but suffered from neglect soon after, leading to complaints in 1900 that it resembled a dumping ground.
The former committee chairman's decisions led to further problems, as he allowed inappropriate use of the public park, contributing to its decline.
