Lines of Life: Schubert & Kurtag album review Benjamin Appl's wonderful tribute to extraordinary composer
Briefly

Benjamin Appl has collaborated with Gyorgy Kurtag since 2018, presenting an album that intricately weaves Schubert, Brahms, and Kurtag’s songs. The centerpiece is Kurtag’s Holderlin-Gesange, primarily featuring Appl's unaccompanied vocals, conveying profound meaning in each note. Accompanied by Pierre-Laurent Aimard for Kurtag’s songs and James Baillieu for most Schubert pieces, this collection celebrates Appl's versatile repertoire. The final two tracks feature Kurtag himself at the piano, making this album not only a showcase of Appl's artistry but also a tribute to Kurtag as he approaches his 99th birthday.
It's a beautifully realised collection, not only evidence of Appl's command of a wide-ranging repertoire, but also a wonderful tribute to one of the greatest composers.
