Large piles of books were left on the pavement outside the former Broad Green Library in Croydon by contractors clearing the building. Mayor Jason Perry criticized the treatment of the books as unacceptable and promised action against the contractors. The library closed due to budget cuts and is being converted into an Asian Resource Centre. The mayor revealed that squatters previously lived in the library, causing damage. Although the library will not reopen, the books will be accessible at the new resource center, despite community concerns over the closure of multiple libraries.
Hundreds of books were left strewn across the pavement by council-employed contractors outside the former Broad Green Library. Mayor Jason Perry described the treatment of these books as 'unacceptable' and promised to take action against those responsible.
The former library, repurposed into an Asian Resource Centre, had also housed squatters before the clean-up. Mayor Perry expressed that books are precious and should not be treated poorly.
Residents collected some of the discarded books, which have now been returned to the building, as the mayor pointed out the damage inflicted by squatters.
While the building will not operate as a library, the books will be available at the new Asian Resource Centre, which has faced criticism following the closure of four libraries as part of budget cuts.
