Leila Shahid died at age 76 at her home in the south of France, according to family reports cited by Le Monde. Her sister Zeina told the AFP news agency that she died today. Palestinian officials and diplomats paid tribute, calling her an iconic ambassador and a tremendous loss for Palestine and supporters of justice. Majed Bamya described her as "Palestine personified in the francophone world" and praised her magnanimity and compassion. Hussam Zumlot called her a towering figure who carried her people's cause with grace and unwavering dedication. Born in Beirut in 1949, Shahid studied at the American University of Beirut, met Yasser Arafat, worked in Lebanese refugee camps, and became the first woman to represent the Palestine Liberation Organization abroad beginning in Ireland in 1989 before serving as envoy to France and the EU.
