"He believed the government's money was not funny money. He wanted the receiving transit systems to account for what they received," said Wendy Penner, his only survivor.
"After his pension was locked in, he was able to tell the truth. The FTA was not happy," his wife revealed, highlighting how his letters after retirement were bold and straightforward.
"By last year, I had earned over $700, it was a token amount because I used to claim I was a 'Letter to the editor' widow," she added, reflecting on her support of his writing.
Larry Penner was a prolific writer whose letters prompted discussions on transit issues and were a keystone of local journalism, influencing public opinion and policy.
