Local elections across nine council areas in the UK, including Norfolk and Suffolk, have been postponed until 2026. Angela Rayner, the Housing Secretary, stated that elections should proceed unless there is compelling justification for delay. The decision, criticized by opponents, is framed by the Labour government as necessary for proper devolution and avoiding wasteful elections for bodies that may not exist. Critics, including Nigel Farage and Conservative leaders, have challenged the legitimacy and rationale behind this postponement, labeling it as unprecedented and undemocratic. They urge for local consensus and transparency in governance processes.
The government's starting point is for all elections to go ahead unless there is strong justification for postponement. The bar is high and rightly so.
I thought that only dictators cancelled elections but what I see today is collusion to stave off the threat of Reform UK on May 1.
There has been no attempt to gather consensus within two-tier areas. Local residents have not been consulted.
This mass postponement of elections is unprecedented and entirely wrong.
