Multiple erroneous evacuation emergency alerts triggered a wave of frustration and fear among LA County residents. This confusion stemmed from a catastrophic miscommunication where an alert targeted at the Kenneth Fire instead reached an estimated 10 million people, creating widespread panic.
The errors began when a notification intended for the Calabasas and West Hills area was mistakenly sent to the entirety of Los Angeles County, covering approximately 10 million residents. This situation left many feeling 'angry' and 'frustrated', as emphasized by LA County Emergency Management Director Kevin McGowan.
McGowan clarified that while the mistakes have been 'painful' and 'scary' for residents, he urged individuals not to opt out of their emergency alerts. 'These alert tools have saved lives during this emergency,' he stated.
The cause of the mix-up is currently under investigation, but McGowan indicated that the alerts were not 'human driven.' Instead, they are supposed to be automatically sent through an aggregator, which suggests a possible systemic failure.
