Explosions struck Kyiv at about 3am, waking tens of thousands and forcing people to choose between sheltering at home or seeking safer cover. In the eastern Darnytskyi block a five-storey residential building was hit; an end of the block collapsed after residents had taken refuge in central corridors. Seventeen people were killed when two explosions destroyed one end of the apartment block. Survivors described dust, smoke, screaming and stunned confusion. A serving soldier, Ivan Zhelezko, saw his second-floor flat severely damaged and salvaged only a handful of possessions. Rescue workers cleared rubble on Boryspilska Street on the left bank of the Dneiper River.
At a five-storey residential apartment block in the eastern Darnytskyi block of the city, residents said they had heard Russian bombing in the distance. It was a familiar sound, and many had gathered away from the windows in central corridors that extended along the block only for disaster to strike.
