Sean McGovern was extradited from the United Arab Emirates last summer to face charges of murder and directing a criminal organisation. The Special Criminal Court granted legal aid to cover a team of four barristers for McGovern. Ms Justice Karen O'Connor approved the application. The judge noted that the State made no observation on the application. In those circumstances, the court stated it would have to accept information submitted by McGovern at face value. The legal aid provision ensures representation for the accused while proceedings continue in the Special Criminal Court.
