Judge blocks Trump's executive order redefining birthright citizenship
Briefly

A federal judge, John Coughenour, has temporarily blocked President Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship, stating it is "blatantly unconstitutional." This ruling came during the first hearing in a multi-state legal effort against the order, which has been challenged by 22 states and immigrant rights groups. Coughenour highlighted that he has never seen a case that so clearly violates the Constitution in his four decades of service. The controversy centers on the interpretations of the 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to individuals born in the US.
This is a blatantly unconstitutional order,” Coughenour told Shumate. He has been on the bench for more than four decades and hasn't seen a clearer violation.
Coughenour repeatedly interrupted a Justice Department lawyer during arguments to ask how he could consider the order constitutional, insisting the hearing was their only opportunity.
The temporary restraining order sought by Arizona, Illinois, Oregon, and Washington was the first to get a hearing before a judge and applies nationally.
The lawsuits argue that the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship for people born in the US, which states have been interpreting for over a century.
