John Lewis has introduced AI technology for age verification to allow online sales of knives, a first for an online retailer. Customers must consent to facial recognition to prove they are over 18, using a system provided by Yoti. This new method fulfills legal requirements under UK law that prohibit selling knives to minors, enabling John Lewis to resume online knife sales for the first time since 2009. The technology boasts high accuracy, and Yoti assures that users’ photos are deleted immediately after verification, ensuring privacy while adhering to the Online Safety Act.
John Lewis is the first online retailer to implement AI for age verification when purchasing knives, enhancing compliance with UK law and enabling knife sales online.
Using Yoti's facial age estimation technology, online shoppers must permit a photo capture for verification, allowing John Lewis to resume knife sales that had ceased since 2009.
Yoti’s software is said to surpass human judgment and includes anti-spoofing features, preventing minors from using masks or photos to bypass the age check.
With the implementation of age verification, Yoti confirmed its software has been validated by Ofcom, making it compliant with UK regulations under the Online Safety Act.
