Micheál Martin and Simon Harris are finalizing their cabinet line-ups ahead of an announcement. Jennifer Carroll MacNeill is set to be promoted as health minister, marking a significant change. Additionally, there is speculation about the appointment of Mr. O'Callaghan to the justice minister role. Competing interests among Fianna Fáil members, including Dara Calleary and Charlie McConalogue, complicate cabinet positions. Discussions also include merging the departments of higher education and education, as well as the Department of Enterprise taking on tourism responsibilities. The Dáil will convene to elect Mr. Martin as taoiseach for a second term.
"It's highly likely. It's still all being considered with geography, gender and so on," a source close to incoming taoiseach Micheál Martin said.
If this was to happen, it would allow for a community or rural affairs minister, or a whole new ministry for integration and migration. However, cards are being kept close to the chest on this front.
