Rabbi Benjamin Barnett of Portland’s Havurah Shalom has been vocal about the emotional impact of the Gaza conflict. Following a new ceasefire, he expressed relief mixed with deep sorrow for the suffering over the last 15 months. The congregation adapted prayers to encompass the plight of Israeli hostages and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Similarly, community member Noga Vilan has organized a weekly vigil to raise awareness about the hostages, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging all victims, regardless of their background. Together, these actions reflect a collective yearning for peace and remembrance.
I also feel a sense of the tremendous just such heartache, and heartbreak, and rage, honestly, of what's happened over these past 15 months.
May all the people of Israel and all the people of Palestine be protected under the wings of your endlessly loving presence.
