The hefty 137-page document dated January 7 summarized years of Smith's investigation into the 2020 election interference case involving President-elect Donald Trump. It concluded by saying that Trump would have been convicted in the case if he had not been elected president in 2024.
Smith wrote in the last line of the report: "Indeed, but for Mr. Trump's election and imminent return to the Presidency, the Office assessed that the admissible evidence was sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial."
Trump wrote an early Tuesday post on Truth Social responding to Smith's report, calling the prosecutor "desperate" and "a lamebrain prosecutor who was unable to get his case tried before the Election."
