Italy's highest court has upheld Amanda Knox's slander conviction for wrongfully accusing Patrick Lumumba of the murder of Meredith Kercher. Lumumba's wrongful arrest highlights issues of police pressure, as Knox claims she was coerced into making the false allegation after prolonged questioning without legal counsel. This ruling could finalize a 17-year journey marked by murder accusations, wrongful convictions, and later exonerations involving Knox and her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito. Ultimately, Rudy Guede was convicted of Kercher's murder, leaving Knox and Sollecito free after their innocence was established by a higher court.
The now 37-year-old was re-convicted of slander in June, a decision that was upheld on Thursday. The ruling could bring a 17-year legal saga to an end.
Knox's defence team contests the slander charge, arguing that she was pressured into making the accusation against Lumumba after a long night of questioning, during which Italian police fed her false information.
Lumumba, who now lives in Poland, said he was satisfied with the decision. 'Amanda was wrong. This verdict has to accompany her for the rest of her life,' Lumumba said.
