'It must have been hell on earth' - Retracing our brave grandfather's footsteps in the blood-soaked fields of Flanders

This autumn, my brother Andrew and I fulfilled a long-held ambition to visit the place where our Irish grandfather fought in one of the final battles of World War I.
Before dawn on October 14, 1918, our mother's father, Arthur James Ingoldsby, found himself near Belgium's border with northern France, leading his company against German positions in Wervik.
Lieutenant Ingoldsby captured 'many prisoners and five machine guns', according to his medal citation, winning him a Military Cross and promotion to captain.
