"Ms Heraty, from Liscarney, Westport, Co Mayo, and her fellow captives were brought straight to hospital following their released shortly after lunchtime on Friday. It is understood Ms Heraty and the other seven captives including a three-year-old child are suffering the effects of malnutrition, dehydration and trauma. However, it is understood Ms Heraty is communicating clearly and her family have been informed she is generally well."
"Her release comes after weeks of intense negotiations with her kidnappers who demanded a ransom, although it it not known if one was paid. Last night in her parish church in Cushlough, Ms Heraty's sister Mags was embraced by local people following a mass of thanksgiving. Another sister of Ms Heraty told the Irish Independent her family were overjoyed. Ms Heraty was held for 27 days and nights in what an informed source described as "brutally cruel circumstances"."
Gena Heraty of Liscarney, Westport, Co Mayo, and seven other captives including a three-year-old child were released shortly after lunchtime on Friday and taken straight to hospital. The captives are suffering the effects of malnutrition, dehydration and trauma, but Ms Heraty is communicating clearly and her family have been informed she is generally well. The release followed weeks of intense negotiations during which kidnappers demanded a ransom; it is not known whether a ransom was paid. Ms Heraty had been held for 27 days in brutally cruel circumstances with several false dawns and is believed abducted by a criminal group aligned with the Viv Ansanm gang in Haiti. Family and community responded with joy and thanksgiving.
